چکیده
tive spike-like electrical discharges occur in the nucleus reticularis pontis caudalis and appear to spread to various parts of the visual system (5, 6). The close temporal association between periods of masseter contractions and REM periods could be explained on the basis of the anatomical proximity (within the brain stem) of the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve, which is directly responsible for the contractions of the masticatory muscles, and the nucleus reticularis pontis caudalis. Our preliminary findings thus hold promise for the hypothesis, suggested by Michel et al. (6), that the spread of activity from the pontine reticular formation may not be confined to the visual system. GEORGES R. REDING WILLIAM C. RUBRIGHT ALLAN RECHTSCHAFFEN ROBERT S. Rhabdomyolysis and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Secondary to Multiple Wasp Stings
Background: Wasp stings usually cause local reactions such as itching, urticaria, angioedema and anaphylaxis. Life-threatening complications following multiple wasp stings are relatively rare and unexpected. However, rhabdomyolysis and acute respiratory distress syndrome following wasp stings are possible. Case presentation: A middle-aged male worker was stung by a swarm of wasps all over his b...
متن کاملECOLOGY, BEHAVIOR AND BIONOMICS The Acceptance Rate of Young Wasps by Alien Colonies Depends on Colony Developmental Stages in the Swarm-Founding Wasp, Polybia paulista von Ihering (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)
In social insects, newly emerged individuals learn the colony-specifi c chemical label from their natal comb shortly after their emergence. These labels help to identify each individual’s colony of origin and are used as a recognition template against which individuals can discriminate nestmates from non-nestmates. Our previous studies with Polybia paulista von Ihering support this general patt...
متن کاملExperimental analysis of a paternally inherited extrachromosomal factor.
Virtually all known cases of extrachromosomal inheritance involve cytoplasmic inheritance through the maternal line. Recently, a paternally transmitted factor that causes the production of all-male families has been discovered in a parasitic wasp. The wasp has haplodiploid sex determination: male offspring are haploid and usually develop from unfertilized eggs, whereas females are diploid and u...
متن کاملMale soldier caste larvae are non-aggressive in the polyembryonic wasp Copidosoma floridanum.
Polyembryonic wasps are the only parasitoids in which sociality has evolved. Theory implicates both competition and sex ratio manipulation in the evolution of a sterile soldier caste. However, investment in soldiers by males and females is predicted to differ depending upon how offspring are allocated to hosts and the mating system. Here, we compared male and female soldiers in the polyembryoni...
متن کاملWasp stings (Vespa affinis) induced acute kidney injury following rhabdomyolysis in a 25-year-old woman.
Wasp sting is a relatively common arthropod assault. This usually results in pain and mild allergic reactions, but sometimes may cause severe systemic reaction and multiorgan dysfunction including rhabdomyolysis, hemolysis, coagulopathy, hepatic, renal and cardiac complications. Along with several other pathomechanisms, rhabdomyolysis is a distinguished cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) in pa...
متن کاملDisturbance effects on community structure of Ficus tinctoria fig wasps in Xishuangbanna, China: Implications for the fig/fig wasp mutualism
Fig trees are important components of tropical forests, because their fruits are eaten by so many vertebrates, but they depend on pollinating fig wasps to produce mature fruits. Disturbance to habitat structure can have a major impact on insect diversity and composition, potentially reducing fruit yields. We investigated the impact of habitat disturbance on the fig wasp community associated wit...
